| I wrote this one originally to encourage a great Oxford keyboardist to "climb the wall" and take his talent, beyond
the local pub, to a wider audience . . . I don't know if he ever did, but I'm grateful to him for inspiring me to write it. The song later took on other " connotations" making the text have a more general meaning . . . to encourage all musicians, (or anybody else for that matter) to "go for it" . . . It became my very own "Johnny Be Good" and the guys really jammed BIG TIME . . . I was on vocals, played lead and rhythm guitar, also Mark from "The Egg" (whom I call the Techno Grateful Dead) also played the rhythm guitar and fab sustained notes at the end. . . inspiring my backing vocals, that I hadn't planned until Ian Cambell, the drummer, suggested I put some backing vocals on . . . and off we went! Richard, the engineer and studio owner, also jumped in on guitar . . .the slide bit I couldn't manage. . . We had fun. This was a "surprise session" (I love those) . . ."The Boys" and I had rehearsed it one way, (basically a bit slower), and when we got to the studio, Ian flew !. . . injecting it with "the Great Spirit". . . We were in a wonderful environment, the studio was in a converted barn, we could look out the windows at cows on the hill in the beautiful English countryside . . . which I highly recommend for inspiration. . . |
